Burned By Fire

Seven weeks ago we finally moved back into our house!  All of the damage done to our home because of the tornado was repaired.  It was a long and hard process and we are so glad to be home!  Then the following happened.

About three weeks ago Liz was doing the dishes and she told Jeremiah that the hot water was cold.  He went up into the attic to take a look at the tankless water heater.  I was at the other end of the house.  Suddenly, I heard him enter the house and call me with a degree of concern in his voice.  Our conversation went like this:

Jeremiah:  BABY?!  BABY?!
Me:  Yes?!  What is it?
Jeremiah:  I set myself on fire.
Me:  What?!?!  And what is that smell?
Jeremiah:  THAT'S YOUR HUSBAND BURNING!!!
Me:  What?!  Come on.  Let's go to the bathroom and get you cleaned up.  What on earth happened???
Jeremiah: I took the safety cover off the water heater and Liz turned the hot water on.  When the hot water is turned on, water movement starts the flame.  I was unaware that a cloud of gas had developed on or about where the safety cover use to be.  Suddenly, a huge flame came out.
Me:  What is that smell?
Jeremiah:  THAT'S ME BURNING WOMAN!!!
Me:  Oh.  You could've burned your face off.
Jeremiah:  I know, right?
Me: Why did you take the safety cover off?
Jeremiah:  It seemed like a good idea at the time!
Me: Don't yell at me.  I'm not the one that set myself on fire!!!

Since the very day that we started dating, I've always heard a thud, crash, bump, bang or some concerning noise coming from the garage.  I am not kidding.  Jeremiah is going to die by his own hands one day.  I am so afraid that one day I'm going to walk into the garage and find Jeremiah's body remains spread all over it.  Sophia may have my fight but the ability to cheat death comes from her daddy!  I made sure that I took pictures because I wasn't sure if y'all would believe me or not.  I promise, these photos have not been digitally altered.

He fried his hair.

Eyebrows and eyelashes, too.

Just another day in the life of a Prickett.

Jeremiah, you can't play possum with a ball of fire.

We Survived Week One

The day after Diva arrived to the TCU we were put to work!  The first order of business was to give Sophia Lynette a bath and change her trach ties.  Believe me, it's not as easy as it sounds.  It was a long hard week but we made it through.  I can't believe how exhausted we were.  Actually, I can.

This was the first time ever that I have given her a bath in a tub.  I've only given her a couple of sponge baths in the past.  I think the nurses in NICU have only given her a tub bath a couple of times.  Usually, she's given a sponge bath.  Anyway, she did okay until the end.  I think she got cold and was over the bath business.  I was trying to hurry but I didn't want to hurt her or disconnect anything.  I think her favorite part was getting her hair washed.  Her eyes were closed and she was just smiling away.  I loved it!

Jeremiah stopped by during his lunch.  Both of us were so glad that we survived her bath.  If you look closely, Sophia is still upset.  Deep down inside, she's happy to be clean :o)

Jeremiah eventually went back to work.  Without him to entertain us, Sophia and I snuggled after we got  her dressed and comfortable.  For the sake of her respiratory system, I chose to bathe her every other day because baths are exhausting for her.  I love how pink she is!  When she doesn't oxygenate well, she turns a blue and gray color.  It's not pretty.  So pink is good.

Last Sunday Jeremiah changed her trach ties.  Trach ties are the strings that secure and stabilize the trach.  Everyone keep telling us that we'll be able to do it much faster AND by ourselves before we bring Sophia home.  I'm glad that they have faith in us!  We have to make the ties, change the ties, clean the site, watch her respiratory status, etc. all at the same time!  I'm sure we'll get faster and better at it one day but that day seems so far away right now!

The day after we arrived to the TCU Jeremiah had an idea. He thought we should give one of the wagon  panels back to the NICU so that everyone could sign it.  Brilliant!  This is more accurate of the many people that have taken care of our baby girl.  Doctors, nurses, therapists, care partners...everyone.  The one person that did not sign it was Jamie because she's been off of work for a few days.  Jamie is often a charge nurse.  Jamie is also the nurse that took care of Sophia the day of the tornado.  After one of our trees fell on the garage AND block the garage door, it was impossible for me to get out and make it to the hospital.  Even if I made it out of the garage, making it out of my neighborhood would've been impossible because of the chaos.  Anyway, I called the hospital that day and Jamie said that Sophia was having a great day!  Jamie put her in the bouncy seat for the first time and Sophia loved it!  I visit Sophia every single day.  That was the only day that I didn't make it out to the hospital.

Goodbye NICU...Hello TCU

YESTERDAY WAS AWESOME!!!  Our dear sweet baby no longer needs intensive care!  She is stable enough to leave the NICU and go upstairs to the TCU.  The TCU is the Transitional Care Unit.  The ultimate goal of the TCU is to educate Jeremiah and I on how to care for Sophia Lynette while she has a trach.

Baby girl is 7 months and 3 days old!  The only time that she has been in the hallways is because she is going to or coming from a surgery.  The girl has stared death in the face countless times.  We have cried so many times for her and with her.  But today's tears were tears of joy.  So many doctors, nurses, therapists, and chaplains have taken care of our baby.  They have cried and prayed along with us.  All of you have cried and prayed for us.  There is no way that I can ever thank any of you enough.  All I can do is say thank you.  Please believe that the good Lord will bless you for any thought, prayer, or meal that you've provided on behalf of our family.

I say all of that to say this.  Because of the incredible support that Sophia Lynette has received from us and from you, she is definitely on the road to recovery.  Leaving the NICU was a big deal!  Being the diva that she is, Miss. Sophia Lynette received the royal treatment upon her departure!

When I arrived at the hospital, baby girl was all dressed up and ready to go.  I didn't have a bow that matched her outfit so Lisa, the child life specialist, had one for Miss. Sophia.  It matched perfectly!

Leaving the NICU was bittersweet.  Leaving means that Sophia has gotten better.  However, the TCU is a promotion and has to happen in order for Sophia to come home.

I was all smiles from ear to ear the entire afternoon.

This is Sonny Burgess.  I had no idea who he was or why he was outside of Sophia's room.  Apparently, he's a recording artist in the area.  I think it was Lisa that called him and asked him to come and be a part of our day.  He sang "Little Red Wagon" and "You've Got A In A Friend In Me".  He played a couple of other songs, too.  He would remix the lyrics and substitute different words with Sophia's name.  I cried over this gesture, too.

This is only a quarter of Diva's entourage.  At some point these people have taken care of Diva more times than I can count!

I found Jessica in the hallway and she was usually a charge nurse.  She took care of Sophia a couple of times.  She was the first person to teach me how to feed Sophia through her g-button.

Regina and Angie.  These two were pretty awesome, too!  Regina was usually a charge nurse and took care of Sophia in her darkest days.  We also swapped stories about our toddlers.  Angie was Sophia's primary nurse.  Basically, whenever she worked she had Miss. Sophia and did a great job taking care of our baby girl.  This was actually taken on the day that our families came to the hospital.

And then the tears really came.  As a mother, my job is to provide a quality life for my children.  About a week after we arrived at the hospital, I saw a baby in the hallway riding in a little red wagon.  I asked the nurses if Sophia could go on a ride in a little red wagon and they said no because she was too sick.  As she kept getting better I would ask again.  They said no again.  You basically have to be pretty darn stable and on little or no oxygen.  Right before we left the room for the last time, Lisa whips out this "wagon"!  It completely caught me by surprise!  She explained to me that she knew how important the red wagon was to me and Sophia and she wanted to make sure that we rode in the red little wagon today.  It is hard core, too!  It is made out of wood and I was told that it took an entire afternoon to make.  I loved it!

You can't tell but her name is bedazzled!

After being discharged from NICU we were off to upstairs!  Her SUMMARY discharge was 13 pages!  In fact, I would not be surprised if she had several binders for her records.

Waiting for the elevator and Sonny is still singing!  I hope Sophia loved it as much as I did.

We made it!  Here we are in our new room and Sophia did great.  She didn't desat once!  Diana is the lady on the right that made the wagon.  She even painted "radio flyer" on the sides.  Seriously, every child should ride in red wagon.  I am loving the wagon I'm tellin' you!  I pushed so hard for a real wagon because it would have given Sophia a normal childhood experience.  I'm not giving up.  We're still going for a ride in a red wagon even if it's in November.  She has earned it and totally deserves it!  The point of the wagon is to give my child a regular childhood experience for once.  Period.

This is Deanna.  She took care of Sophia a lot in the beginning when Sophia was really sick.  It was quite fitting that she was the one to walk us upstairs.  Of all days, Angie was off today.

She had to be admitted all over again in the TCU.  She's getting measured here and she weighed in at 15lbs!  Last week she was promoted to a size 3 diaper.  She can start wearing clothes on a daily basis and I'm so excited for that. We'll see how long that lasts because that girl gets hot and sweaty quick.

This is Dr. Simpson!  We will forever love Dr. Simpson.  She has saved Miss. Sophia more times than I can count.  I'm a little nervous that we are officially off of her service.  However, she assured us that we are in good hands and she said that she will check on us from time to time.  See ya later doc!

The TCU gave us a bubble map and each bubble has a task or objective.  Essentially, it's a check list on how to care for Sophia.  Every time Jeremiah and I accomplish something with Sophia, we check it off and move on the next bubble/task.  Eventually, when we get to the end, we get to take her home when she's ready.  I'm sure we'll be ready before she's ready and that's okay.

Her crib in the TCU is pretty big.  She is so tiny in it compared to the cribs in the NICU.

All of the excitement of yesterday's events were finally taking it's toll and baby is getting sleepy.  We finally got her admitted and comfortable.  She did great all afternoon!  Her vitals were stable the entire time and I was so happy about that!

Mr. Man was exhausted and so was I.  This was the only blanket that I could find to cover him up.  Katy, a friend of mine, made it for Diva.  She wanted to capture my personality as well as Sophia's and she nailed it!

Dear Sophia, yesterday was a fun day wasn't it?!  One day I hope you will appreciate the time, energy, and effort that a lot of people put into making today happen just for you!  It was quite the farewell and no one deserved it more than you.  Job well done for making it this far.  We still have a long way to go but we'll take it one day at a time.  Just like we always do.  I am so proud of you!  Daddy and I love you very much.  Goodnight sweet girl :o)

I've seen a lot of babies come and go over the last seven months and I've never seen any of them receive a discharge farewell the way that Sophia did. Those babies went home and we are only going upstairs!  I hope Sophia will be able to look back and appreciate everything that so many people have done for her and her family.

Regarding her condition, her lungs are still nasty but she is getting the respiratory support that she needs from a ventilator.  She's still on some pretty serious drugs but the plan is to ween her slow.  We will ween her drugs by 10% on Mondays and Thursdays.  We are trying to have her home by Thanksgiving but Christmas is more realistic.  Ultimately, I would like for her to get to the point that she doesn't need the trach anymore.  I would also like for her to bottle feed so that we don't have to use the g-button for her feedings.  Basically, the less things that she comes home with the better.  And so the TCU chapter of our life begins!

PUSH

My SIL, Diana, recently wrote her first book, PUSH!  I've been along for the ride a little bit but have been crazy distracted with my own family.  Her book can be found under the name of D.P. Davidson.  Apparently, the book is loosely based on her childhood.  Heck, you may even find all of the Prickett men in it!  I've never read the entire book so y'all will have to tell me about it.  Personally, I think the best part of the book is that she dedicated it to Sophia.  How sweet is that?  She could've dedicated it to her husband or her children but she didn't.  Her book can be purchased by clicking on the links below.  Happy reading!

My New Mommymobile

Jeremiah had been talking about getting me a new van for a couple of days.  I tried to talk him out of it but he insisted.  I think he needed a distraction from all of our baby drama.  I can't blame him.  Plus, I really didn't want a new one.  I just wanted my old one pretty again.  Remember this and this?  Anyway, the rear A/C went out.  Then my miles were really adding up because I'm driving to and from the hospital everyday.  Most importantly, I'd much rather him put that money toward a larger house than a new van.  Sigh.  I just wanted my van fixed and didn't want a new one.  Not even a little bit.  Then reality started to set in.  More than likely, Miss. Sophia Lynette is probably going to come home on some equipment.  So, we're going to need room for her, a nurse, equipment, and all of my other kiddos.  The new odyssey's are larger and Jeremiah said that he would feel better if we were in something newer so that he wouldn't worry about us during the day.  Ahhh, that's so sweet :o)

I think this was the final straw.  I dropped the girls off at my parents house so that I could go to the hospital on August 23rd.  Within three minutes of leaving their house, I hear this weird and very loud metal clicking sound.  I just knew it was a tire problem.  I pulled over and saw this!  I went to the nearest Discount Tire and 2-3 hours later I was FINALLY off to the hospital.  After leaving the hospital, we went to the dealership and Jeremiah bought me a new van.  Honestly, I only went to entertain him.  I didn't think he would actually buy one.  I can't blame the man for wanting to take care of his family.

My home away from home.  Seriously, we've only had it for two weeks and we hit 1,000 miles today.   It only had 21 miles when we bought it.  A week ago we had the roof rack installed.  Why did I need a roof rack?  All together now...for my...CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, YAY!!!

The new mommymobile.  Welcome to the family!

One of my favorite things is that you can upload a picture for your wallpaper on the navi screen.  Obviously, I had to put up a picture of Miss. Sophia Lynette.  We can ride as a family now!  Well, this is as close as we can get for now.  The girls always say hi or bye bye whenever we are getting in or out of the van.  It's the sweetest thing.  My next goal is to get baby girl home by Christmas.

Elizabeth's 1st Day of School

Elizabeth has officially started junior high school, YAY!  School started on August 27th and she learned real quick that she is not in elementary anymore.  Personally, I'm loving all of her AP classes!  She complains about the amount of homework but I'm loving it!  She has had more homework the first two weeks of school than she did all of last year.  She was also selected as a reporter for the school newspaper and she is excited about that.  Her first assignment is to cover the school dance this Friday night...with a camera!  This year is looking promising and I hope she does well.  Good luck this year, Elizabeth.  We love you!

Oh, she got her hair cut, too.

Scarlett's 1st Day of School

Today was Scarlett's first day of preschool!  Both of us were equally excited, too.  I've had Scarlett on the waiting list for over a year.  One month before school started, her teacher called and said that she had two spots available and would like to have Scarlett as a student if I was still interested.  Uh, yeah!!!

Our morning started at 7:15AM.  I went into the girls room and found Scarlett like this.

I told her to wake up and that it was time for school and she sprung right up.

Pancakes and a smile for breakfast.  Love it!

I think Savannah is trying to figure out why she's up so early.

All dressed and ready to go!

Our first day together alone.  Ever!

Since Savannah's birthday is in December, she won't start preschool until the fall of 2014.  Then it'll be Diva and I!  By the way, Savannah and Sophia Lynette are already on the waiting list.  Yes, I'm serious :o)

Scarlett had been looking forward to school all summer and I'm glad that she wasn't disappointed.  She came home in good spirits and said that she wanted to go back.  Surprisingly, I didn't get emotional like most moms say they do when they drop off their kids.  Both of us were fine when we separated this morning.  I'm going to miss hanging out with my little social butterfly/shadow/helper!  Anyway, I love you Scarlett and good luck this year!
